Adapted from the Cambridge IGCSE ESL Coursebook

In my view, lifestyle choices are often shown through clothes. For example, some teenagers follow fashion (时尚), while others prefer simple school clothes. Also, a school uniform (校服) can make mornings easier for busy families. When a new trend (趋势 / 潮流) becomes popular, students may want to copy it. At first, this can feel fun. Later, it may put pressure on students. In short, clothes can show identity (身份 / 认同), but comfort matters too. Most importantly, a comfortable (舒适的) outfit helps students focus on lessons.

Part 2 Question and Model Answer

SITUATION The head teacher has asked students to discuss clothing rules for next term. You are considering the following options:

OPTION A keeping a full school uniform every day
OPTION B allowing one dress-your-own-style day each month

Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Say which option you would prefer, and why.

Model Answer
SITUATION Honestly, our head teacher wants student views on clothing rules.
OPTION A On one hand, a full school uniform can be more sustainable (可持续的) if students wear it for years. For example, families buy fewer clothes. However, some students may dislike strict rules.
OPTION B On the other hand, a dress-your-own-style day can support local (当地的) brands and personal choice. If the rules are clear, the day can still feel fair (公平的). Still, some students may compare clothes too much.
PREFERENCE I would choose the uniform rule, because it is simple. REASON The main reason is, students do not need to keep up with trends (跟上潮流). REASON Also, quiet students do not have to stand out (显眼 / 脱颖而出).

3 What could happen if students always tried to keep up with trends?
Model Answer
OPINION Overall, always following trends can create pressure. REASON If students try to keep up with trends (跟上潮流), they may spend too much money. EXAMPLE / EXTENSION For example, one popular jacket may become old quickly.

4 How important is personal choice in teenage lifestyles?
Model Answer
OPINION In my view, personal choice is important in teenage lifestyles. REASON This is because, when students think before copying friends, they feel more comfortable with themselves.
