Topic: medical care
1 Can you tell me something about how students get medical help at school?
Yes, students usually go to the school nurse first. If it is serious, the teacher calls parents or sends the student to hospital. In my view, this is safe because adults can decide quickly.

Yes, I think, basic first aid is useful for young people. This is because, small injuries can happen during sport or travel. For example, students should know how to clean a cut and call an adult.

Adapted from the Cambridge IGCSE ESL Coursebook

In daily life, good healthcare (医疗保健) helps people feel safer at school and at home. For example, a student with a fever should not wait until an emergency (紧急情况) happens. Instead, they should ask for a consultation (问诊 / 咨询) with a doctor or nurse. When symptoms continue, it is sensible to seek help (寻求帮助) early. Also, fair access (获得机会 / 使用权) matters because some families live far from a clinic. In my view, schools can teach students simple health steps. If teenagers learn safe actions, they can respond more calmly. Overall, medical care should be clear, quick, and easy to understand.

SITUATION Your school is choosing a health activity to help students learn about medical care. You are considering the following options:

OPTION A a first-aid workshop after school
OPTION B a short talk from a local doctor

Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Say which option you would prefer, and why.

Model Answer
SITUATION Well, I will compare two health activities for students.
OPTION A On one hand, a first-aid workshop teaches prevention (预防) because students learn what to do before a problem becomes worse. Also, it feels active and easy to remember. If students practise simple steps, they may stay calmer in a real problem.
OPTION B On the other hand, a talk from a professional (专业的) doctor can answer questions about health and privacy (隐私). However, some students may listen quietly and forget the advice. Although a talk is useful, practical work may be more worthwhile (值得的) for teenagers.
PREFERENCE I would choose, the first-aid workshop. REASON The main reason is, for small accidents, it is better safe than sorry (有备无患).

2 How important is access to medical care for families in your country?
Model Answer
OPINION I think, access to medical care is very important. REASON The reason is, if families have poor access (获得机会 / 使用权), they may wait too long. EXAMPLE / EXTENSION For instance, a nearby clinic can help parents act before a fever becomes serious.

3 Should teenagers ask for help quickly when they feel unwell? Why?
Model Answer
OPINION Yes, I think, teenagers should ask for help quickly. REASON This is because, when pain continues, it is safer to seek help (寻求帮助) than guess. EXAMPLE / EXTENSION For example, a student with chest pain must tell an adult immediately.

4 What are the advantages of equal access to healthcare?
Model Answer
OPINION In my view, equal access to healthcare is important for every community. REASON This is because, when people can get help early, small problems do not become serious.
